Day 02 – Favorite gender to play

Well, I usually play men. But this has nothing to do with them being my "favorite" and everything to do with a society that only gives men the interesting roles to play. I've played some women in my time in RP, but I really have to fight against the prevailing RP culture that wants them to pair up, fall in love, have sex, get pregnant, and live happily ever after.

I...just don't want to play that stuff.

Listen, I like shipping. It can be fun, if done with good writers who want to do more than write smut (I kind of hate writing smut. I suck at it). I've had an awesome time doing ships with people (shout out to venezia and sycorax and iggykins and whoever else I'm forgetting). And I don't mind shipping at all! But I don't really want my entire line to BE shipping. And when you play a woman...a lot of times that feels like what it's all about.

Like iggykins said, I've gotten so sick of it some places that I won't play a character who isn't already in a committed relationship, or whose significant other isn't already played by someone I trust in game. I RP for character development, not shipping.

And I think that female characters, like females in society, are expected to fit into this mold of OMG SINGLE WOMAN NEEDS A SIGNIFICANT OTHER more than men are. I mean...I don't want children in real life...why am I going to want to go through that in RP? And yet it seems that the pinnacle of life for a female character is to get herself pregnant with ALL THE BEHBEHS. Like. Um, no thanks.

I could rant on this for ages, but I think that answers the question. I hope. XD

I'm one of the few, probably, who DOESN'T feel like all my girls have to get married and have babies. I enjoy writing ships (although ugh no smut. I'm so uncomfortable writing it), but I've had characters of both genders who just aren't suited to settling down. Then again I also do love taking a character who isn't interested and over time developing that kind of relationship with someone, because its fun for me to play out that struggle between what they want and how they feel about someone. And I've had characters of both genre's on the opposite end, too, so for me it's about the character rather than the gender, but I also don't care much what's EXPECTED of my kidlets. I DO WHAT I WANT!

I do like shipping but like you I am careful with whom I do it with. There are a few people that I trust completely and I know that it won't just be a "OMG FALL IN LOVE GET MARRIED" thing. We'll build things over time and that's what I love. I have been lucky enough to run into some people at DW who I can now say that I do trust to write a ship with but more often than not I stick to those I know.

I understand that, I really do but at the same time I want to ship because in relation to my vent the other day in my four and a bit years of rp I've pretty much NEVER shipped (or had the other person of the relationship in game). I've gotten used to single women but sometimes you just want it. Also I think it's partly due to the fact I haven't dated in rl so I just get paranoid easily.

At the same time I do want it to be part of the characters development progression. I will never ship for the sake of it, if I reach out to someone for a ship which won't happen 99% of the time it's because I think the two chars have a good chemistry, they're getting on well icky and it could be a lot of fun actually developing their relationship.

Oh, yes, I agree. I mean, as long as it's played out well and proper time is done with it - it can be great. My complaint is more with the insta-shipping I see so much.

Oh, I understand. I'm not saying I don't enjoy shipping, I just hate seeing it as like...the only thing women are allowed to do.
